October brings a completely different feeling to Kashmir. The green landscape of summer slowly gives way to shades of gold, amber and red.. The green landscape of summer slowly gives way to shades of gold, amber and red, and the Chinar trees begin telling the story of Harud, the traditional Kashmiri autumn season. This is Kashmir in October—a time when the valley feels quieter, cooler and dramatically different from the summer months. The Mughal gardens of Srinagar glow with autumn colours, roads become lined with fallen Chinar leaves, and destinations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg take on a distinctly autumn character.
For travellers, October is one of the best months to experience Kashmir’s autumn landscape. Days are generally comfortable for sightseeing, while mornings and evenings become cooler. It is also important to understand that October is a transition season rather than a guaranteed snow season in most tourist areas. Instead, the month is known primarily for autumn foliage, clear mountain scenery, comfortable sightseeing and the changing colours of Kashmir.
In traditional Kashmiri culture, this seasonal transformation is associated with Harud, the period of autumn and harvest. That connection is what makes October more than simply another month on the Kashmir calendar—it is a time when the landscape, weather, agriculture and daily life begin preparing for winter.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Kashmir?
Yes. October is one of the best months to visit Kashmir for travellers who want autumn colours, comfortable daytime sightseeing, cooler weather and generally lighter crowds than the peak summer season.
The main advantage of October is the changing landscape. Chinar trees begin turning shades of yellow, orange and red, while destinations such as Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg take on an autumn character.
October is particularly suitable for photographers, couples, honeymooners, families who prefer cooler sightseeing weather and travellers who want to experience Kashmir without the peak summer atmosphere.
However, October is not the best month for travellers whose main goal is guaranteed snowfall, skiing or a full winter experience. Snow is not normally expected in Srinagar, while snowfall at higher elevations such as Gulmarg and Apharwat remains dependent on weather and timing.
Who Should Choose October?
October is a strong choice for:
- Autumn foliage and photography
- Comfortable sightseeing
- Couples and honeymooners
- Families wanting a quieter trip
- Saffron and apple-season experiences
- Travellers who prefer cooler weather over summer heat
Who May Prefer Another Month?
Travellers whose priority is reliable snow, skiing and winter scenery should consider the core winter months instead of depending on October for those experiences.

What Is Kashmir Weather Like in October?
Kashmir weather in October is generally dry and pleasant during the day, with the monsoon long gone and skies mostly clear. The real story is the gap between day and night: afternoons can feel comfortably warm in a light jacket, while evenings and early mornings turn sharply cold, particularly as the month progresses. Layering is essential rather than optional.
Srinagar Weather in October
In Srinagar, daytime temperatures in early and mid-October typically sit in the mid-to-high teens Celsius, occasionally touching 20°C on clear days. Nights are cooler and get progressively colder — by late October, minimums in and around Srinagar can drop close to or below 7–8°C, and cold spells have pushed the city into single digits or lower. Rainfall is usually light, though the region has occasionally seen intense short spells of rain in October, so it’s worth packing a compact rain layer even in an otherwise dry month.
Gulmarg Weather in October
Gulmarg sits much higher than Srinagar, and it shows. Daytime weather is crisp and often sunny, but nights are noticeably colder than in the valley floor towns. It isn’t unusual for Gulmarg’s overnight temperature to dip below freezing by the second half of October, particularly after a spell of rain or an early snow event higher up. Warm layers, a proper jacket, and closed shoes matter more here than anywhere else on a typical October itinerary.
Pahalgam in October
Pahalgam, the base for the Lidder Valley and the Amarnath Yatra route, follows a similar pattern to Gulmarg: pleasant, cool days and cold nights that turn sharply colder by late October. Historical weather records show Pahalgam dropping to sub-zero overnight lows in the back half of the month during cold spells. The scenery compensates — pine forests turning russet, the Lidder river running clear, and far fewer tourists than in peak season. It’s a strong pick for slow walks, riverside time, and photography, and it works well as either a day trip from Srinagar or an overnight stop, depending on your itinerary length.
Sonamarg Weather in October
Sonamarg, higher and further from the valley floor, cools down earlier than Srinagar or Pahalgam. Daytime visits are usually fine through most of October, but by late in the month, road and weather conditions can change quickly, and it’s worth checking local conditions before heading up, since this is one of the first areas to see early-season snow at altitude.
What Is Kashmir Like in Early, Mid and Late October?
Kashmir in October doesn’t feel the same on the 2nd as it does on the 30th. Splitting the month helps set the right expectations.
Early October in Kashmir
Early October still carries some late-summer character. Days are comfortably mild, greenery hasn’t fully turned, and the shift into autumn colours is only just beginning. This is a good window for travellers who want cooler weather without the sharper cold of later in the month.
Mid October in Kashmir
By mid-October, the Chinar trees and poplar avenues start showing real autumn colour, nights are noticeably cooler, and the first hints of saffron-season activity begin around Pampore. Daytime sightseeing remains comfortable with a light-to-medium jacket.
Kashmir in October End
The end of October is a different experience. Nights turn genuinely cold across Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, autumn colours are usually at or past their peak, and the Pampore saffron harvest is in full swing. There’s also a real, though not guaranteed, chance of early snowfall at higher elevations like Apharwat above Gulmarg. Travellers visiting Kashmir in late October should pack proper cold-weather layers, not just a light jacket.
What Is the October Season Like in Kashmir?
The October season in Kashmir is best understood as Kashmir’s shoulder season between summer tourism and winter skiing. Hotel rates tend to be more reasonable than in July and August, popular sights are noticeably less crowded, and the valley’s autumn palette — reds, ambers, and golds against snow-dusted peaks — is unique to this time of year. It’s a season built around scenery and calm rather than water sports or winter activities.
Does It Snow in Kashmir in October?
October is not a guaranteed snowfall month across Kashmir. Snow in the plains and city areas like Srinagar is uncommon in October. Higher-altitude spots — particularly Gulmarg’s upper slopes and the Apharwat ridge, and occasionally Sonamarg — have a better, though still inconsistent, chance of light snowfall, especially in the last third of the month. Some years bring an early dusting at these elevations; others stay dry well into November. Treat snowfall in Kashmir in October as a possibility at altitude, not an expectation, and check short-range forecasts closer to your travel dates.
Snowfall in Srinagar in October
Snowfall in Srinagar in October is rare. The city sits at a lower elevation, and its October weather pattern is typically dry with cold, clear nights rather than snow. If snow reaches Srinagar in October, it’s an unusual weather event rather than the norm — plan around cold, dry conditions instead.
Snowfall in Gulmarg in October
Gulmarg has the best (though still not guaranteed) chance of October snow in Kashmir, particularly at higher points along the gondola route. Light early-season snowfall at Gulmarg’s upper reaches has been recorded as early as the first week of October in some years, though it typically melts quickly at this stage of the season. Late October is when the odds improve slightly.
Can You See Snow at Apharwat?
Apharwat Peak, reached via the second phase of the Gulmarg Gondola, is the highest point most tourists visit and the spot most likely to show snow patches in October, especially later in the month. Even without fresh snowfall, residual snow can remain in shaded areas at this altitude. Gondola access depends on weather and maintenance schedules, so it’s worth confirming operating status before you go.
When Can You See Autumn Colours in Kashmir?
Autumn colours build steadily through October, with the effect strongest from mid-month onward and often continuing into early November. Chinar trees around Dal Lake, Naseem Bagh, and the Mughal Gardens turn deep red and orange, while poplar-lined avenues across the valley take on gold tones. Exact timing shifts slightly year to year depending on temperature and rainfall, so travellers chasing peak foliage should aim for the second half of the month for the best odds.
Can You See Saffron Fields in Kashmir in October?
Yes — but timing matters. Kashmir’s saffron harvest, centred on Pampore and nearby villages like Lethpora and Khrew, typically begins in the last week of October and continues into mid-November. Visiting in the final days of October gives you a reasonable chance of catching the purple crocus fields in bloom and farmers hand-picking the flowers at dawn; visiting earlier in the month, you’re likely to miss it entirely.
Can You See Apple Harvest in Kashmir in October?
October overlaps with the tail end of Kashmir’s apple harvest season, which runs roughly from late summer through October in many orchard belts, particularly around Shopian, Sopore, and parts of South Kashmir. Driving through these areas in October, you’ll often see orchards being picked and roadside apple stalls doing brisk business, adding another layer to the autumn scenery beyond foliage and saffron.
What Are the Best Places to Visit in Kashmir in October?
October rewards a slightly different set of places to visit in Kashmir than the summer season, with foliage-rich spots and calmer settings taking priority over crowd-heavy summer favourites.
Srinagar
Srinagar is the natural base for an October trip. A Shikara ride on Dal Lake framed by turning Chinar leaves, a walk through the Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi), and an evening at Lal Chowk are all more enjoyable without summer crowds.
Gulmarg
Gulmarg in October offers meadows still partly green, cooler air, and gondola rides with clear mountain views before the winter ski season begins. It’s also where you have the best (if modest) chance of spotting early snow at altitude.
Pahalgam
Pahalgam in October is quieter and scenic, with the Lidder river, pine forests turning colour, and easy walks around Betaab Valley and Aru. It suits travellers who want a slower pace over one or two nights rather than a rushed day trip.
Sonamarg
Sonamarg, the “meadow of gold,” is worth a day trip earlier in October before higher-altitude weather turns colder; by late month, conditions here can shift quickly.
Doodhpathri
A quieter alternative to Gulmarg, Doodhpathri offers rolling meadows and pine forest without the same tourist volume, making it a good pick for travellers who prefer a less commercial stop.
Yusmarg
Similar in spirit to Doodhpathri, Yusmarg is a meadow-and-forest destination best suited to travellers with an extra day and an interest in short walks over structured sightseeing.
Pampore
Pampore is essential if your trip lands in the last week of October or later — it is the centre of Kashmir’s saffron harvest and offers a genuinely unique, time-limited experience.
Gurez Valley
Gurez is a remote, high-altitude valley near the Line of Control that requires more travel time and, depending on current regulations, permits for certain areas. It’s best suited to travellers with extra days and an interest in off-the-beaten-path scenery rather than a standard first-time itinerary. Confirm current access rules before planning a visit.
What Are the Best Things to Do in Kashmir in October?
Beyond sightseeing, October supports a mix of relaxed and moderately active things to do in Kashmir: Shikara rides and houseboat stays on Dal and Nigeen Lakes, gondola rides at Gulmarg, gentle riverside walks in Pahalgam’s Aru and Betaab valleys, photography trips timed around Chinar foliage, saffron-field visits near Pampore in the last week of the month, local food experiences (Wazwan meals, Kahwa tea), and browsing handicraft and shawl markets in Srinagar. Adventure options like paragliding at Gulmarg and horse riding at Pahalgam and Sonamarg typically continue through October, weather permitting.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola Available in October?
Generally, yes. The Gulmarg Gondola typically operates through October as part of its standard schedule, though both phases are subject to weather conditions, wind, and periodic maintenance closures, and operations have occasionally been suspended for technical checks. Confirm same-day or next-day operating status locally before planning your visit around it, and build in a backup activity in case of closure.
How Many Days Are Enough for a Kashmir Trip in October?
For most travellers, 5 nights and 6 days is a practical duration for covering Srinagar, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Doodhpathri and Pahalgam without making the trip excessively rushed. A 4-night/5-day trip can work for a shorter itinerary, while 7 nights/8 days or more gives you enough time to add destinations such as Achabal, Verinag, Kokernag, Yusmarg or Gurez while keeping a more relaxed pace.
What Is a Good 5N/6D Kashmir Itinerary for October?
A 5-night/6-day Kashmir itinerary works well for travellers who want to cover the main destinations without making every day too rushed. October weather can change as the month progresses, so keeping some flexibility for higher-altitude sightseeing is useful.

How Much Does a Kashmir Trip Cost in October?
Costs vary widely based on hotel category, vehicle type, number of nights, and which activities (gondola, Shikara, adventure sports) you add on. As a general guide:
- Budget travel: Modest hotels/guesthouses, shared or economy vehicles, minimal add-on activities — the most economical way to cover the core circuit.
- Mid-range travel: 3-star hotels or comfortable houseboats, private vehicle, key activities like the gondola and Shikara included — the most common choice for a 5N/6D trip.
- Premium travel: 4–5 star properties or premium houseboats, private vehicle with driver, most activities and some flexibility for offbeat add-ons.
What moves the price most: number of nights, hotel star category, private vs. shared vehicle, Gondola Phase 1 vs. Phase 1+2, Shikara duration, and travel dates (rates often ease compared to peak summer, but late-October festival periods or long weekends can push prices up). For an accurate, current quote, request a day-wise breakdown from a local operator rather than relying on a generic average, since rates change seasonally.
How to Reach Kashmir in October?
By Flight
Srinagar International Airport (Sheikh ul-Alam Airport) has regular domestic connections from major Indian cities, and is the fastest way to reach the valley. October weather is generally stable for flights, though early snow or fog events later in the month can occasionally cause delays — build in a buffer if you have tight onward connections.
By Train
Rail connectivity to Kashmir has improved significantly with the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link. A Vande Bharat Express service now runs directly between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, cutting a journey that used to take 10–12 hours by road down to roughly 5 hours by train, with the route crossing engineering landmarks like the Chenab and Anji bridges. Since this service has expanded and schedules have changed more than once in recent years, confirm current train numbers, timings, and availability directly on the Indian Railways booking platform before finalising travel plans.
By Road
Travelling between Jammu and Srinagar by road generally takes several hours and the actual journey time can vary considerably depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, highway disruptions and stops along the way. Travellers should allow additional buffer time rather than relying on a fixed journey duration.
Is Flight or Train Better for Kashmir in October?
Flying is faster and more predictable, making it the better choice if your trip is short or your dates are fixed. The Jammu–Srinagar train is a strong option if you’re already routing through Jammu, want to avoid a long road journey, or specifically want the scenic rail experience across the Chenab bridge — but check current schedules and seat availability well in advance, since demand on this route has been high since launch.
What Should I Wear in Kashmir in October?
Layering is the single most useful packing strategy for Kashmir in October. Early October calls for light-to-medium layers with a jacket for evenings. Mid-October needs a proper warm jacket, especially after sunset. Late October requires heavier layers — thermal wear, a padded jacket, gloves, and a cap — particularly for Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, where night temperatures can approach or fall below freezing. Comfortable, closed, and reasonably waterproof shoes matter throughout the month for uneven terrain and occasional rain.
Is Kashmir Safe to Visit in October?
Kashmir receives large numbers of domestic and international tourists every year, and October is a well-established part of the travel season. As with any destination, it’s sensible to check current travel advisories from your government and official Jammu & Kashmir Tourism sources before you travel, stay updated on local weather and road conditions during your trip, and follow guidance from your hotel or tour operator regarding specific areas. Avoid presenting blanket safety guarantees to yourself or relying on outdated information — conditions and advisories can change, so verify close to your travel dates rather than relying on older articles.
Is Kashmir Good for Families in October?
Yes, with some pacing adjustments. October’s cooler nights mean choosing hotels with reliable heating, especially in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Keep drive segments realistic — Srinagar to Pahalgam or Gulmarg both take a few hours — and build in rest breaks rather than back-to-back sightseeing, particularly with young children or elderly travellers who are more sensitive to the day-night temperature swing.
Is Kashmir Good for a Honeymoon in October?
Kashmir in October works well for honeymoons: autumn scenery, houseboat stays on Dal Lake, Shikara rides at sunset, and thinner crowds at popular viewpoints all suit a slower, more private pace than the summer rush. Choose hotels or houseboats with good heating for cooler nights, and consider Gulmarg or Pahalgam for a quieter overnight stay away from the city.
Is October Better Than September for Kashmir?
Both are shoulder-season months with mild days and thinning crowds, but October generally shows stronger and more widespread autumn colour than September, along with the added draw of the saffron harvest in the final week. September tends to be slightly milder overall, especially at night, making it a marginally gentler choice for travellers who want autumn character without the sharper late-October cold.
Is October Better Than November for Kashmir?
October offers milder daytime weather and more reliable sightseeing conditions than November, when temperatures drop further and higher-altitude roads and attractions become more weather-dependent. November can extend the saffron season and occasionally brings more definite early snow, but at the cost of colder, less predictable travel conditions overall. October is the steadier choice for most first-time visitors.
What Should You Know Before Booking a Kashmir Trip in October?
Before booking, confirm current Gulmarg Gondola operating status, check the latest Jammu–Srinagar train schedule if you plan to travel by rail, pack for a wide day-night temperature swing rather than one fixed climate, decide whether catching the saffron harvest (last week of October onward) matters enough to shift your travel dates, and build a short weather-check step into your final pre-trip planning, since October’s back half can shift quickly toward winter-like conditions at higher elevations.
